Mr. Fakhruddin Akhunzada

Mr. Fakhruddin Akhunzada is a language development professional dedicated to the preservation and promotion of indigenous languages in northern Pakistan. As the Executive Director of the Forum for Language Initiatives (FLI), which he helped establish in 2002, he has spearheaded numerous initiatives to support under-documented and under-resourced languages. His work has contributed to the transcription and literature creation for over a dozen endangered languages. An expert in sociolinguistics and cultural anthropology, particularly within the diverse Chitral Valley, Fakhruddin has also contributed to cultural policy development and curriculum design for the Khowar language in government schools. He is an alumnus of CoLang 2014 and has served on its advisory circle, reflecting his commitment to advancing language documentation and revitalization efforts.

At the LC Conference and IMLD Celebration 2025, Mr. Akhunzada will present Revitalizing Indigenous Language Poetry in Northern Pakistan. His session will highlight FLI’s innovative initiatives to document, preserve, and promote poetry in endangered languages, including training poets, recording oral traditions, and sharing their work through publications and social media. This comprehensive approach serves as a model for safeguarding cultural heritage and fostering linguistic diversity.
