No Such Thing as a Dead Language: Resurrecting Latin through Romansch
Dr. Ellen Cressman Buchmann Frye
Dr. Ellen Cressman Buchmann Frye is the Chair of the Department of Language, Literature, Culture, and Writing at William Paterson University in New Jersey, USA. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, focusing on early modern European literature, with a specialization in Spanish and Italian works. Dr. Frye also teaches English courses and conducts research on Romansch literature and culture, reflecting her Swiss heritage.
At the LC Conference & IMLD Celebration 2025, Dr. Frye will present “No Such Thing as a Dead Language: Resurrecting Latin through Romansch.” Her talk will provide a brief history of Romansch, explain its basic grammar – highlighting how the language delineates between Germanic and Romance languages—and offer compelling literary and cultural examples.
