Linguists Collective Conference & International Mother Language Day IMLD Celebration
Renowned community researcher Fakhruddin Akhunzada, Executive Director of the Forum for Language Initiatives (FLI), emerges as a key speaker at the LC Conference and IMLD celebration. With a focus on language endangerment in Northern Pakistan, Fakhruddin, an authority on the Khowar language, will share insights into the root causes and propose preventive measures based on his extensive work, including projects targeting under-documented languages in the Chitral Valley.
A distinguished academic, Fakhruddin’s contributions extend to cultural policy development for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government and curriculum initiatives for the Khowar language. Attendees can anticipate a concise yet comprehensive session, delving into the challenges faced by local languages and offering actionable steps to safeguard linguistic diversity in the region.
Fakhruddin Akhunzada is a community researcher of Khowar, an Indo-Aryan language spoken by a few hundred thousand people in the Chitral Valley. He is currently serving as the Executive Director of the Forum for Language Initiatives (FLI). The organisation has been in place since 2002, and he was part of the group originally establishing the organisation and has ever since carried out several activities that have served to favour the many local languages of this region. His particular accomplishment is a project in which his team targeted four under-documented and seriously under-resourced languages: Yidgha, Gawarbati, Dameli, and Ushojo. This is a small beginning but a crucial one for languages not previously written or acknowledged. His own research interests are mainly in the area of languages, the cultural anthropology of the linguistically and culturally diverse Chitral Valley, and the language policy of the county. He is the author and co-author of books and research papers. He is an alumni of CoLang 2014, a US-based institute that holds language documentation training for international participants. He has contributed to cultural policy development for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government and curriculum development in the Khowar language for government schools.
