Linguists Collective Conference & International Mother Language Day IMLD Celebration
Prof Mark is an Emeritus Professor of Cognitive Computing at Goldsmiths, University of London, where he directed the Tungsten Centre for Intelligent Data Analytics (TCIDA). He holds a BSc in Computer Science & Cybernetics and a PhD in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Reading, UK. With a career spanning AI research, cognitive computing, and the philosophy of AI, he has authored over 170 publications and two books. He previously served as Chair of the UK Society for Artificial Intelligence and the Simulation of Behaviour (AISB) (2010–2014) and is an International Fellow of the Karel Čapek Center in Prague. He currently acts as a Scientific Adviser to FACT360, a company specialising in AI-driven data analytics.
At the LC Conference & IMLD Celebration 2025, Prof Mark will present “Deep Stupidity: AI and Semantics.” He will critically examine the limitations of Artificial Neural Networks, highlighting instances where AI systems have failed, such as autonomous vehicle accidents and biased decision-making in automated processes. Drawing on insights from Judea Pearl, he will discuss the argument that current AI systems rely on curve fitting rather than true understanding or causal reasoning. Prof Mark will explore Gilbert Ryle’s concept of a “category mistake”, arguing that AI, as a computational entity, does not truly understand anything. His talk will challenge common assumptions about AI’s capabilities, sparking discussion on the future role of AI in society.
