Linguists Collective Conference & International Mother Language Day IMLD Celebration
Thibault Carrier will speak about the synergy between AI and Big Data, laying the foundation for an insightful journey. He will unravel the intricacies of generative AI and its profound implications for the translation domain. The session will acknowledge the limitations of AI translation, bearing in mind the diverse variations within languages, encompassing UK English, American English, Indian English, and more. He will speak about the pivotal role of AI in the current translation business, highlighting that translation encompasses more than mere words.
Shifting the focus towards the future, he will raise questions about the adaptability of current AI, not only in translation but also in the nuanced realm of localisation, encompassing cultural aspects, specific slang, and historical contexts. The talk will question the practicality and cost-effectiveness of honing AI for dynamic languages. The discussion will include two examples where AI encounters challenges – ‘The Bard’s Tale’ and ‘Wizardry.’ Thibault Carrier will emphasise the necessity of human oversight in navigating AI’s limitations. Although AI can manage a substantial part of the task, Thibault Carrier will delve into the crucial reasons why human intervention remains indispensable. Encouraging a holistic perspective, he will position AI and translation as integral components of a larger, interconnected whole.
Although currently working in IT management, Thibault Carrier is essentially a self-taught person. His passion for knowledge and innovation has taken him from school benches to a wide variety of companies and positions. He has worked for Digital Equipment Corporation, Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, Mercedes-Benz, and, nowadays, Céline. Carrier serves as both a trainer and a consultant, and his experience in the field enables him to support the courses he gives with concrete examples. He is no stranger to microcomputers, the arrival of 16/32-bit processors, the creation of speech synthesis, the first steps of AI (through transputers), the beginnings of computer graphics, the emergence of networks, virtualisation, and now, he is naturally turning his attention to artificial intelligence. He uses many generative tools on a daily basis in his various activities and possesses both the vision of a demanding user and that of a technician.
